How to make a PNG transparent – background removal made easy

A cut-out logo, a product photo without background, a person for a collage — transparent PNGs are everyday gold. You no longer need Photoshop; AI tools in the browser do the job in seconds.

What transparency means technically

PNG has an alpha channel: each pixel can carry not only a colour but a transparency level (0 = invisible, 255 = fully opaque). That's how soft transitions on hair, glass or shadows happen.

JPG can't do this — every pixel is always opaque. If you need transparency, you must use PNG, WebP or AVIF. Switching to WebP/AVIF often saves 50–70% in file size at the same quality.

Removing backgrounds online

AI-based tools (think remove.bg-style features) automatically detect the subject and erase everything else. With simple high-contrast subjects this is near-perfect; complex hair or reflections may need touch-ups.

If you just need a rough cut-out, Pixshift's crop tool plus manual eraser is enough for many web use cases (product photos on white) — no AI required.

Common pitfalls

JPG can't store transparency. Convert a transparent PNG to JPG and you'll get a white or black background instead. For websites, stick with PNG/WebP/AVIF.

Browsers render transparency correctly — but some email apps or messengers don't. If your cut-out suddenly shows a grey backdrop in WhatsApp, that's the receiving system, not your file.

When hair and glass become a problem

Algorithmic background removers hit a wall on hair, eyeglass lenses, jewelry and translucent fabrics. You'll spot it as the notorious halo — a thin band of background colour clinging to the subject.

Pro trick: shoot the photo against a solid wall, ideally in a colour complementary to the subject (green for a red sweater, blue for a yellow hat). Pixshift's algorithm doesn't have to guess — it gets a clean separating edge. Result: a cleaner mask with less rework.
